August 23 - Fishing with Wayne Carpenter
I had the pleasure of fishing with Wayne Carpenter of Xtreme Bass Tackle and Combat Fishing Lake St. Clair this Tuesday. I've been in contact with Wayne since meeting him at the Novi fishing show this winter. Wayne has a unique knowledge of St. Clair, and an amazing understanding of the fishery.
We fished about 9 hours and covered about 45 miles of water. Not only is Wayne a great stick on the water, he's a great guy. His publications and tackle innovations have changed the way we fish the blue water of St. Clair. I look forward to fishing with him again soon. Wayne's 3.5
Thanks again Wayne!
September 16,17 - CATT DQ Classic at Muskegon Lake
Unfortunately my weeknight partner was unable to attend the classic on Muskegon lake. I was able to use a sub, Steve Filkins, to fish the Classic. On the line was a brand new Nitro valued at $29,000, and a purse of around $7,000. Day 1 competition was pretty tight leaving us in 10th place just 3lbs behind the leaders. Confident with our pattern we headed out on Sunday with the same plan. Unfortunately, take-off time was pushed back nearly 30 minutes the second day, and we moved back to flight 3, leaving us less of our precious morning bite.
Steve scored quickly with a 2 1/2lb largie and that was the end of the action. We never got another keeper bite. It was a bit disappointing to end the tournament on 1 fish, but we were still able to finish top 25 for the Classic. Congratulations to Hensley and Tucker, winning the tournament and a new Nitro. Also, congratulations to CATT for an amazing inaugural year.

October 9 - Northern Skeeter Owners Tournament
Conditions proved to be a little tough on the lake during the owners tournament this year. Lake Erie had been pounded by wind, and St. Clair closely resembled mud. The fish seemed to be pretty scattered out, and those who did well employed the run and gun tactics. Around 29 pounds to win with seven fish was a little below expectations. Dave Brown and I were able to boat 4 keepers, and I managed to beat a big one off with the net early in the morning. Sorry Dave, but it wouldn't have mattered.
It's great to be a Skeeter owner, the tournament is always great, and the people are even better. See you next year.
